Terms of Service

These Terms govern your use of Luma — the app — and the sync server I operate at sync.luma-app.cc. By downloading, installing or using Luma, or by creating an account, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use Luma.

These Terms cover the official app and the server I personally operate. If you point the app at a different, self-hosted server, that server's operator's own terms apply to your use of it — see Self-hosting.

Who can use Luma

You must be at least 13 years old to use Luma or hold an account. If you're under the age required by your own country's laws to agree to terms like these without a parent or guardian, you need their permission first.

The service

Luma is local-first: a fresh install works fully offline, with no account required, and your data lives in a local database on your own device. Creating an optional account unlocks:

• Sync — encrypted backup and sync of individual features between your devices.
• Family groups — a shared calendar between people you invite.
• The AI Assistant's built-in modes — Aurora, Nebula and Pulsar, relayed through my server with a shared, fair-use allowance, as an alternative to bringing your own AI provider key.
• Plugins — 34 optional tools you install one at a time, each self-contained with its own data and page.

I can add, change or remove features, plugins and plans at any time. Luma is actively developed; nothing about its current feature set is guaranteed to stay exactly as it is today.

Accounts

• You're responsible for keeping your password secret and for everything that happens under your account. Because sync is end-to-end encrypted, I cannot reset a forgotten password — if you lose it, your synced data cannot be recovered by me or anyone else.
• New accounts go through an approval step (either by hand or by email verification link) before anything server-backed works.
• One account is meant for one person. Family groups are the supported way to share access with people you live with or trust — see Family groups.

Plans and redeem codes

Luma's Core plan is free and requires nothing beyond an account. Orbit and Nova are higher-tier plans that are currently unlocked by redeeming an access code — there is no purchase or payment required today. If that changes in the future, I'll update these Terms and tell account holders in the app before any payment is required of them.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Upload, store, sync or transmit anything illegal, including through encrypted or otherwise opaque channels (e.g. synced data, the Cloud Files plugin, or Secure Chat messages).
• Use the AI Assistant — whether your own provider key or Luma's built-in modes — to generate illegal or harmful content.
• Resell, publicly share or distribute plan redeem codes.
• Script, automate or otherwise abuse the shared free-tier AI allowance (Aurora, Nebula, Pulsar) beyond ordinary personal use.
• Scrape, reverse-engineer or otherwise interact with the sync server's API other than through the official Luma app.
• Impersonate another person, harass or abuse other users (including through Family sharing or Secure Chat), or attempt to gain unauthorized access to another account or to the server itself.
• Do anything that would violate the rights of others or applicable law.

On encrypted data: most of what you sync, and everything in Cloud Files or Secure Chat, is end-to-end encrypted — I generally cannot see its contents. That doesn't make the prohibition above conditional on my being able to inspect it: if I receive a credible report or legal process concerning illegal material tied to your account, I can suspend, remove, or otherwise act on that account even without being able to read the underlying ciphertext myself.

Family groups

If you create a Family group, you're responsible for making sure the people you invite also follow these Terms while using features shared through that group. I may act against the family (up to and including removing it) if that turns out not to be the case. Unlike ordinary sync, Family calendar sharing is not end-to-end encrypted — see the Privacy Policy for what that means.

The AI Assistant and third-party providers

When you use your own API key with the AI Assistant, you're also bound by that provider's own terms (Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, or Google, depending which you connect) — I'm not a party to that relationship and am not responsible for how that provider handles your requests. When you use Luma's built-in modes, your usage is subject to a fair, per-user allowance that I can adjust at any time.

AI-generated output can be wrong, and I'm not responsible for decisions you make based on it. Nothing the Assistant produces should be treated as professional financial, legal, medical or security advice.

Your content

You own whatever you put into Luma — your notes, finances, photos, messages, and everything else. Using sync or Family sharing grants me only the limited rights needed to store, transmit or relay that content as the feature is meant to work (e.g. relaying an encrypted blob to your other devices, or a shared calendar event to your family group) — nothing more.

Ownership of Luma

Luma's app and server code, its design, and its branding are proprietary — all rights reserved. The fact that the source is visible on GitHub doesn't grant you a license to copy, redistribute, modify, or create derivative works from it, or to reverse-engineer the app or server, beyond what's needed for ordinary personal use of Luma itself.

Feedback

If you send me an idea, bug report, or suggestion — by email, GitHub issue, or otherwise — you agree I can use it freely, including commercially, without owing you credit or compensation.

Self-hosting

Luma's server is open to self-host. If you run your own instance, or connect to one run by somebody else, these Terms (specifically the sections describing my server, my AI allowance, and my plans) don't apply to that server — its operator's own terms do. What still applies everywhere is your agreement to use the Luma app itself lawfully and in line with Acceptable use.

Availability

sync.luma-app.cc is a free, solo-operated service. I don't guarantee it will be available at all times — it may go down for maintenance, updates, or reasons outside my control, without notice.

Suspension and termination

I can suspend or terminate your account for violating these Terms. Serious violations — illegal content, abusing the server, or harming other users — can result in immediate termination. Lesser violations will generally get a warning and a chance to fix the issue first. Terminating your account deletes your encrypted data from the server, the same as if you'd deleted it yourself; data already stored locally on your own devices isn't touched.

You can stop using Luma and delete your account at any time from Settings.

Disclaimer of warranties

Luma is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. I don't warrant that Luma will be error-free, secure, or uninterrupted, or that it's fit for any particular purpose — including as your sole record of financial data or as your only copy of any password. Keep your own backups of anything you can't afford to lose.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, I'm not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of Luma — including lost data, lost profits, or lost access to your own synced content (for example, from a forgotten password, given Luma's zero-knowledge encryption design). My total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of Luma is limited to the amount you paid me for the service in the 12 months before the claim arose — which, on the free Core plan, is zero.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability where the law doesn't allow it to be limited (for example, liability for intentional misconduct).

Indemnification

You agree to cover any claims, losses, or expenses arising from your violation of these Terms or misuse of Luma, to the extent caused by you.

Changes to these Terms

I can update these Terms as Luma changes. If a change is significant, I'll update the date above and call it out in the app for account holders. Continuing to use Luma after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.

Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. If a dispute comes up, please email me first — see Contact — so we can try to sort it out directly. If that doesn't work, disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of the Netherlands.

General

If any part of these Terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. Not enforcing a term on one occasion doesn't waive my right to enforce it later. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between us about using Luma.
